Haloed Rose Between Two Guardians

Description

Centered in a narrow vertical composition, a single rose under a bell-shaped glass dome occupies the luminous axis between two figures: a humanlike woman at left and a large beastlike humanoid at right. The woman faces the beast in strict profile, her long wavy hair and fitted bodice rendered in alternating white highlights and deep black folds; both of her hands rest lightly on the pedestal’s plinth beside the dome. The beast mirrors her orientation, its broad, furred silhouette crowned with backward-curving horns and a pronounced snout, a clawed hand pressing the plinth on the opposite side. The dome glows with a stippled halo that backlights both figures and throws crisp white rim light along their facing edges.

The figures and pedestal sit before a carved pointed arch and a heavy swagged curtain; ornate capitals, scalloped tracery and twin candelabra flank the central group. Textural contrasts are emphasized through bold black masses, sharp white highlights and halftone stippling used for midtones: fabric folds, fur direction, carved stone and glass sheen are all differentiated by varied linework and dot density. The tight framing keeps the main subjects in a central vertical band while large black margins and a dark lower foreground isolate the tableau, lending the scene a formal, theatrical stillness.
