Throne of Burning Skulls

Description

Nothing about this throne promises protection. A crowned skeleton holds a flaming skull and a staff crowned with another, while a hooded reaper waits behind and snarling beasts press in from the side. Coins, roses, a goblet, chains, and a dagger lie below like the remains of conquest. The artwork pushes authority beyond death until only ritual remains. The ruler has outlasted subjects, enemies, and perhaps the kingdom itself, yet he still performs the ceremony of power. That excess gives the image its dark humor and menace. What is a throne worth when everyone who could obey is gone? The flames continue, but victory has become indistinguishable from ruin.
