Maelstrom at the Canyon Mouth

Description

Centered in a narrow canyon, a single-masted longship rides misted water toward a brilliant radial light at the upper center. The sail is a stark silhouette against the glare, its folds and small tears implied by crosshatching, while a carved animal figurehead juts forward from the prow. Six small humanlike silhouettes crowd the hull and a row of round shields lines the starboard side, their bright bosses and rim highlights punctuating the ship’s profile.

Towering cliffs rise on either side, textured with vertical striations and stippled cascades that channel the eye to the luminous vanishing point. Two large, anthropomorphic beast-figures occupy the lower right quadrant: a forward creature bares fangs and extends a clawed forepaw toward the viewer, while a second snarls from just behind. Mist and spray rendered with soft stipple blur the waterline and partly veil the ship’s base, intensifying the sense of depth between foreground rocks and the receding canyon.

Ornate framing elements and scrollwork form a narrow inner border around the scene, with perched corvids at the top corners and vertical pilaster accents at mid-sides. A bold serif banner reading “MAELSTROM” anchors the lower third, and a circular compass rose sits centered beneath it, overlapping leafy ornamentation. The entire image is executed in a high-contrast engraving style: dense hatching, directional strokes and stippling convey wood grain, fur, rock texture and spray while sharp silhouettes meet the radiant backlight.
