Description

A young lion holds the highest rock as sunlight breaks behind him and a river winds toward distant elephants, an acacia, and a waterfall. Closer to the viewer, a horned skull, fur-lined boots, a small trunk, and a rolled rose suggest lives that have crossed this land before. The work treats the wild as both inheritance and beginning. The cub looks small against the valley, but his position gives him a view of everything that came before. There is no need to decide whether he is waiting, remembering, or preparing to descend. The scene works through that pause—the first morning when a familiar world suddenly appears larger and entirely one’s own.
