Description

Centered within an ornate rope-and-column frame, a solitary seafaring figure dominates the composition. He stands three‑quarters turned with a wide‑brimmed tricorn hat that casts his features into shadow, a ragged overcoat whipping in the gale, a cutlass at his hip and a gleaming hook raised at chest height. Behind him a partially obscured ship wheel and diagonal deck planks draw the eye toward a vanishing point just aft of his torso.

The immediate foreground is a violent surf rendered in high‑contrast stipple and hatching: crested waves and spray lap at the hem of the figure’s coat while a dark reptilian head, teeth bared, rises from the foam. Mid-distance stone arches of a pier or bridge run across the scene, and jagged cliffs and a broken hull punctuate the right side. A suspended lantern to the figure’s right throws a localized glow, while a jagged lightning bolt from the upper right backlights the scene, producing sharp rim highlights on metal, hair and wet surfaces.
