Every finished piece begins with three elements: an idea, a carefully prepared design, and a piece of natural slate with its own character.

The process is deliberate. Each stage is approached with the same goal—to create artwork that feels balanced, permanent, and worthy of the stone beneath it.

The Story Begins Before the Engraving

The work starts long before the slate reaches the studio equipment.

Each design is developed through composition, contrast, line, light, and negative space. The image must tell its story clearly while also respecting the physical character of natural slate.

This preparation is one of the most important parts of the process. A successful engraving is not simply transferred onto stone. It is designed specifically to become part of it.

Choosing the Slate

Natural slate is not a blank, uniform surface.

Every piece contains its own texture, edges, mineral patterns, and subtle variations. Before engraving, each slate is inspected so the artwork and the material can work together rather than compete.

These natural differences are never treated as flaws. They are part of what makes every finished piece distinct.

Precision Guided by Craftsmanship

Modern engraving equipment allows for remarkable accuracy, but the equipment is only a tool.

The final result depends on the decisions made before and during production: how the design is prepared, how the contrast is balanced, how the material responds, and how the finished engraving is inspected.

Each slate is engraved individually.

Working one piece at a time allows the process to remain attentive and controlled. After engraving, every piece is examined for clarity, contrast, balance, and overall presentation.

Only then is it cleaned, prepared, and packaged for its next home.

There is the story of the stone itself—formed by nature and shaped by time.

There is the story within the artwork—the place, idea, memory, or imagination that inspired the design.
